In November, I announced that I was stepping down as the mayor and from the City Commission of the City of Bartow. It was one of the most difficult decisions I have made.
After a long process, I was selected as the Assistant Director of the Florida Department of Health in Polk and Hardee County. Through the vetting process, the state determined there was a potential for a conflict of interest. I could not hold both positions at the same time.
I had to choose.
It’s fair to say I wrestled with this decision. I’ve loved serving the city as both commissioner and mayor. And, while I haven’t been able to accomplish all that I had hoped to do, I am proud of the progress we’ve made in the four years I’ve served.
I feel called to serve my community. Sitting on the city commission afforded me that opportunity. However, my service in that role was always going to be time-limited.
When I got involved, I did so with the commitment to run for at least two terms. As odd as it sounds, three years is a relatively short time to accomplish a lot in local government. Choosing to run when I did came at a cost.
My children were still young. Serving as mayor meant a significant time away from them – time I could not get back. But, with Jenn, Anna, and Max’s support I was able to pursue it.
If there is anything that takes the sting out or stepping away, it is that my new position with DOH allows me the chance to help create healthier, safer communities throughout Polk County.
I am excited about that.
I will also remain a part of the city, albeit behind the scenes. My new position only requires a move up one flight of stairs so I get to remain a part of this community.
Thank you to all the citizens who entrusted me with the opportunity to serve. And, I’ll see you around. 😊
