Here are the books I read in the month of January – the Read Receipts. This month featured 3 non fiction titles and one fantastic story! My goal each month in the new year is to share what I’ve been reading and some (very) brief thoughts on the books. Some I will likely write a more full review of when the time is right.
If there are specific titles you would like to know more about. Or you have a book you think I should check out, give me a shout and let me know.
I Cheerfully Refuse
I absolutely loved Peace Like a River, and this book might be even better. Some of the plot caught me off guard, but it’s beautifully written with characters that continue to linger in my thoughts.
The Anxious Generation
You can’t turn on a podcast these days without hearing an episode featuring Jonathan Haidt. I wish he had written this book ten years ago so I could have applied its insights sooner. There’s so much to unpack here—I may write a fuller review at some point. But in short, if you have kids, please read this book.
Meditations for Mortals
This is the book I thought I was getting when I read Four Thousand Weeks. True to Burkeman’s style, it leans heavily on the why of productivity and time management rather than actionable strategies—but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s filled with both wisdom and practical insights. I really enjoy his writing, even if I disagree with a couple of his principles.
The Obstacle Is the Way
This is a solid introduction to Stoic philosophy for anyone curious about this way of life that Ryan Holiday has recently popularized. The book consists of short chapters, each generally centered around a historical figure who transformed a challenging situation into an advantage. Honestly, it’s just okay. I think I liked Stillness Is the Key better.
