I am less of a music critic than I am a book critic. I don’t profess to have any deep knowledge of the music industry or what qualifies as outstanding artistry.
But I do know what I like.
And, what I like is Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit. I came across Jason’s music a few years ago and have been in love since. And the band’s newest release continues the tradition of excellence. Truthfully, I think he is the best songwriter working today (I know that is saying a lot.)
Top Three Tracks
- If We Were Vampires – death is the ultimate enemy of all earthly relationships.
- Tupelo – feelings of isolation and a longing to go home
- Last of My Kind – what happens when you look around at the world and can’t find your place in it.
I picked three tracks but the whole album is incredible. This is the type of album that is guaranteed to give you all the feels. My favorite music and artists are ones that have something to say. In a time with country music is largely without a soul, Jason Isbell stands apart as someone with real ideas and an incredible talent to share them.
